Not 'Nutty' Nut: Secrets of Almond, Walnut, Cashew and Peanuts

Last Sunday, while driving past my old school, I stopped to savour the innocent joys of childhood while gazing at bright young minds busy in games on my school playground.

It is unquestionably true that nothing compares to the joys we experienced in our childhood days.

Before I knew I was back in time into my long forgotten days.

The red-blue slide had once given me my first fall. Swings remain till day an eternal joy ride to sky and back.

And then I remembered an old song we used to sing while on the swings. I stood and hummed the entire song, recollecting each word in my mind.

Strangely, I was surprised by my own ability to remember the entire song after 30 years. All the while thinking about the Lebanese writer, poet and visual artist about dreams and memories.

"Yesterday is but today's memory, and tomorrow is today's dream." - Khalil Gibran

The children had now gone into their classrooms, the playground now empty. Yet it was thriving with the memories of days gone by.

My friends with whom I have lost touch since ages - small conversations, little nuances all played out before me like an old retro movie.

It is indeed interesting to note that memory and emotion has a deep-rooted connection or maybe its the other way round.

It is perhaps this fact that 'stress' - "a kind of distorted emotion that negatively affects mental and physical health".

My first exchange with stress was probably during exams. Those days exams were a real terror and it was expected of us to excel in that.

As Ayurveda states, too much of anything is bad. Therefore, extreme compulsion to excel should be worthy of rejection.

We, as a society learn our lessons late.

I knew many of my friends who were so stressed that they inevitably goofed up their papers.

Clearly, stress muddles up the brain, other than choking your entire circulatory system.

Imagine what stress would do to your circulatory and nervous system for a continuous period of time.

"Reality is the leading cause of stress among those in touch with it." - Lily Tomlin

The brain is indeed another organ of the human body impossible to replicate.

And its mystery unfathomable. Something we have been taking for granted, especially its holistic health.

Probably that could be a reason we have such a high rise in disorders all tracing back to the functions of the brain.

Let us be very clear on this - The Brain is positioned at the top of the human body for a number of reasons. The reasons are substantial to fill an entire University with research material and still leave enough questions unanswered.

Therefore, brain health is top priority, mandatory and absolutely essential no matter your age, gender, race, or ethnicity.

To begin with, I came to know about this wonder nut much later from our Ayurvedic doctor. And I am mighty thankful for that.

Is it the fault of Mother Nature that, the fact that walnut, naturally made in the shape of a human brain and encased within a hard shell like the skull, had skipped out attention?

Today, we know that Walnuts are loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids and alpha-linolenic acid - the best food for the brain and heart.

Walnuts are, therefore, memory boosting and natural stress buster.

Nuts are Not 'Nutty' - They Profess Smartness!

Personally, I feel walnut should not be called a 'Nut' in any sense, literary or otherwise, simply because it keeps us in senses by driving stress away.

Let us look what else we have 'inappropriately' branded as 'nuts'.

That brings me to almonds. Did you know in Southeast Asia, especially in India, almond-shaped eyes are regarded as beautiful? Famous Indian Beauty and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai is rumoured to have naturally almond shaped eyes.

But there is more to almonds than just beauty.

  • Almonds are low in calories, rich in Vitamin E and Calcium making it excellent for heart, bones and a smooth skin.

  • A natural antioxidant keeping the bad cholesterol in check, magnesium in Almonds help regulate blood pressure.

  • One more interesting fact about Almonds is that it controls the impulse to snack frequently and thus helps in reducing weight.

Ayurveda recommends that almonds are blanched and soaked overnight before consumption especially when you plan to eat almonds for breakfast.

The skin of the Almond may create problems with digestion, hence, it is better to remove them for breakfast.

The best way to consume Almonds is naturally, that is, not as a pill, salted, caramelised or even as packaged almond milk or almond butter.

Go Natural - Always. Encourage your children to carry Almonds in their pockets and eat when they feel the pangs of hunger.

And that brings me to cashew nuts.

  • The curvey cashews are rich in protein and can actually help you shed weight and gain those dangerous curves.

  • It is loaded with magnesium adept in regulating carbs and fats, allowing you to reduce naturally.

  • Another interesting find is that cashew contains a powerful anti-oxidant Zea Xanthin which helps in maintaining retinal health.

And now the only nut which should have been categorised as 'Nut' is Peanut.

Ironically, Peanut is not a nut at all - From the Ayurvedic Perspective, it is considered to be from the legumes family.

Other than the fact that peanuts can make one feel sluggish and lethargic, peanut has many health benefits.

  • Peanut is rich in folic acid and is, therefore, excellent for expecting mothers.

  • Its powerful essential minerals keep unborn babies safe and boost the development of their brain.

  • So, if you are pregnant, do treat yourself with peanuts and if not, it an excellent snack for movie times, just laze around and boost your brain power doing nothing for 'peanuts'.

Those who have been diagnosed with allergies from nuts. Please do not consume any nuts. This post is to make you healthy, happy and heal naturally not to land you in trouble.

Happy Nutting!
